Healing the Body Opening Reception

Healing the Body Opening Reception

Created in 2018, Healing the Body is a series of a classes and workshops that aims to un-silence and empower its participants. It uses approaches to painting and drawing the body that do not rely on the gendered gaze typical of traditional figure painting. Built on an understanding of art as a wellness tool, Healing the Body serves as an informal support group, encouraging community building and open and safe discussion of the body within art and society.

Participants in the Healing the Body workshops create 72” x 42 “ abstract figure portraits and engage in relaxed discussions and meditations on feminist approaches to figuration and tactility in art. The facilitator will stimulate person-centered reflection and group conversation by periodically asking participants to discuss their abstract creations and to "verbalize the narrative" represented by the works. At the end of every session, participants are photographed in front of image projections of their creations. These portraits symbolize a psychic re-connection in consciousness between the body and spirit.

Our long-term objective is to heal inter-generational trauma through meditation and art, as well as create programming with organizations and/or partners that support people with disorders, addictions or disabilities. Victims of abuse, marginalized communities and at-risk youth are also peoples that we plan to serve and support. The end goal is to provide a platform that highlights mental health wellness and the access to art therapy by challenging traditional methods of art instruction and art history education.

I Belong Here - Art of the Shaw Community

In April and May of 2017 Touchstone Gallery artists worked with youth and adults at New Community ArtSpace to create works of art in a variety of media through a program called Touchstone@ArtSpace. Our kid workshops included painting Mondrian style with Shelley Lowenstein and Claudia Samper, Rock City sculpture with Ann Gordon and Paula Lantz, story cloth printing on clay slabs with Susi Cora, and foam prints with Ellyn Weiss. Our adult workshops included intro to intaglio printmaking with Carol Moore, monotype printing with Mary D. Ott and landscape painting with Judith Guiliani. A vibrant selection of the work produced during those workshops is now on display at the ArtSpace Gallery through the end September. Now in its third-year Touchstone@ArtSpace is funded by the Touchstone Foundation for the Arts and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.  The show will be up through September 30th.

An Inauguration Day Morning Service and Open Studio

  • New Community Church and ArtSpace (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

ArtSpace and New Community Church are opening their doors on January 20, 2017.  Join us in silence, storytelling, scripture reading, meditation, prayer, yoga and art making.

In light of our new political and national reality that's being inaugurated on this day, we will be using the powerful, thought provoking and relevant ancient story included in Michael Meade's book "Why the World Doesn't End - Tales of Renewal in Times of Loss" to weave our time together.  The story is about about an Old Woman who is weaving the most beautiful garment.  She is almost finished, but while she stirs the soup in a great cauldron a black dog awakens and moves to where she has left the garment on the floor. This story appears to be troubled with tragedy and filled with uncertainty but it also hints at new beginnings, renewal amidst the chaos.  Come hear more of the story, share, pray and create.

8am - 9am:  Opening Service in the Sanctuary.  Joanna Andreae is graciously bringing us yoga to complete this special time.

9am-noon:  Open Studio at ArtSpace.  There will be projects for all ages offered during this time as an extension of the story by Michael Meade.  Other materials for poster making and other art will be avialable.

$5 fee - supply donation welcomed.
