7 Guardians :: In the Church Where Miles Davis Played

On view through March 15, 2020.

Sundays 1-3pm :: Tuesdays 4-6pm

New Community Church has a rich history as a boarding house and nightclub for black entertainers who performed at the local theaters during the days of segregated Washington. After the riots in the 1960’s this property and others in the neighborhood had become notorious for drug activity, crime and poverty until the 1980s when it became a small ecumenical church and community center. Local lore has it that when Miles Davis was in DC he stayed at the Jean Clore’s Guest House. Davis’ music has returned by way of Nora Maccoby’s paintings through the exhibit, The 7 Guardians. Join us in celebrating this homecoming!

Reflections From Within - Contemporary African American Women Quilters

Exhibit Hours: Tuesdays: 4-8 pm and Sundays:  1-3 pm

Opening Reception: Sunday, August 11th from 1-4 pm

Artist Talk: Sunday, September 8th from 1-3 pm

Closing Reception: Sunday, October 13th from 1-3 pm

Quilters: Marlene Clark, Sandra Ealy, Carolyn Campbell-Flowe, Sondra Hassan, Michelle Maat McClain, Rosalind L. Robinson, Lynora Williams

Reflections From Within is a group exhibition, curated by Marlene Clark, of works by seven local contemporary African American quilters. Quilts in this exhibit reflect very personal interests, feelings and concerns of the makers.  The pieces cover all genres of quilting, including art quilts, traditional blocks, and original designs. Each quilter has her own unique quilting style and uses techniques to help the audience connect to the quilts through a shared love of textile arts.

Marlene Clark was first introduced to quilting when her sister-in-law bought a handmade quilt. Marlene immediately became intrigued by the different fabrics and had to purchase her own quilt made from her most cherished African fabric. Many years later, Marlene attempted to make her first quilt, which was before the advent of the internet and YouTube so learning quilting was a bit of a challenge. She found much respite in taking classes at a local quilt store and connecting with other women at a quilting guild, which eventually led her to form Wee Bee Quilters with eight other women. Within these groups, Marlene learned technique and found her vision and voice as a quilter.

Healing the Body Opening Reception

Healing the Body Opening Reception

Created in 2018, Healing the Body is a series of a classes and workshops that aims to un-silence and empower its participants. It uses approaches to painting and drawing the body that do not rely on the gendered gaze typical of traditional figure painting. Built on an understanding of art as a wellness tool, Healing the Body serves as an informal support group, encouraging community building and open and safe discussion of the body within art and society.

Participants in the Healing the Body workshops create 72” x 42 “ abstract figure portraits and engage in relaxed discussions and meditations on feminist approaches to figuration and tactility in art. The facilitator will stimulate person-centered reflection and group conversation by periodically asking participants to discuss their abstract creations and to "verbalize the narrative" represented by the works. At the end of every session, participants are photographed in front of image projections of their creations. These portraits symbolize a psychic re-connection in consciousness between the body and spirit.

Our long-term objective is to heal inter-generational trauma through meditation and art, as well as create programming with organizations and/or partners that support people with disorders, addictions or disabilities. Victims of abuse, marginalized communities and at-risk youth are also peoples that we plan to serve and support. The end goal is to provide a platform that highlights mental health wellness and the access to art therapy by challenging traditional methods of art instruction and art history education.

Our adult workshops included intro to intaglio printmaking with Carol Moore, monotype printing with Mary D. Ott and landscape painting with Judith Guiliani. A vibrant selection of the work produced during those workshops is now on display at the ArtSpace Gallery through the end September. Now in its third-year Touchstone@ArtSpace is funded by the Touchstone Foundation for the Arts and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.  The show will be up through September 30th.

An Inauguration Day Morning Service and Open Studio

  • Google Calendar ICS

ArtSpace and New Community Church are opening their doors on January 20, 2017.  Join us in silence, storytelling, scripture reading, meditation, prayer, yoga and art making.

In light of our new political and national reality that's being inaugurated on this day, we will be using the powerful, thought provoking and relevant ancient story included in Michael Meade's book "Why the World Doesn't End - Tales of Renewal in Times of Loss" to weave our time together.  The story is about about an Old Woman who is weaving the most beautiful garment.  She is almost finished, but while she stirs the soup in a great cauldron a black dog awakens and moves to where she has left the garment on the floor. This story appears to be troubled with tragedy and filled with uncertainty but it also hints at new beginnings, renewal amidst the chaos.  Come hear more of the story, share, pray and create.

8am - 9am:  Opening Service in the Sanctuary.  Joanna Andreae is graciously bringing us yoga to complete this special time.

9am-noon:  Open Studio at ArtSpace.  There will be projects for all ages offered during this time as an extension of the story by Michael Meade.  Other materials for poster making and other art will be avialable.

$5 fee - supply donation welcomed.
